Zim Impostor Jailed For Three Months

A middle aged Zimbabwean man, Cletus Mbisana Ncube, will spend Christmas and New Year celebrations in prison for trying to acquire the Botswana national identity card (Omang) by false pretences.

Magistrate Nehemiah Moguni sent Ncube to six months' imprisonment three months suspended for two years without being convicted of the same offence. Moguni said that he was being lenient because he was a first offender and had pleaded guilty to the charge.

The court heard that in June 2004, Ncube, who speaks fluent Setswana, approached the offices of National Registration requesting to be given a copy of his lost Omang. He gave an officer different names and when he checked in their electronic records they found a different picture of a person with the names Ncube had provided. Even the fingerprints were different from Ncube's. A year later, Ncube approached the same office and unfortunately for him he found the same officer who had handled his case the previous year. He gave different names and the officer again checked the electronic records but found a different person with different fingerprints from Ncube's.
