Zim illegal immigrant faces rape charge

FRANCISTOWN: A Zimbabwean man who allegedly entered Botswana at an ungazetted point and had been dodging the police since 1991, has been charged with rape.

Ngwenya, who was in obvious pain with a number of stitches in the head, blood shot eyes and a blood soaked jacket, remained quiet as the prosecutor applied for his remand.
Prosecutor Inspector Mokone Mokone said that the accused sustained the injuries at the hands of the instant justice brigade at the time of his arrest.
The accused was also injured as he was beaten by members of the public at the time of his arrest yesterday, he said. Mokone said that the accused also reported to court from the hospital.
Mokone opposed any bail application as Ngwenya was an illegal immigrant and that his life would also be in danger if granted bail.
Ngwenya is alleged to have brutally beaten and stabbed a pregnant woman with a knife before raping her at Jamataka settlement on May 31. Mokone said that the victim was recovering in hospital.
The victim is still hospitalised as she was assaulted and stabbed with a knife by the accused, he said.
Ngwenya was not asked to plead as the investigations are still at an initial stage and the complainant has not yet had a chance to make a statement, said Mokone.
Ngwenya, who originates from Dombodema, Plumtree, is also alleged to have entered Botswana at an ungazetted point in 1991 at Nlaphkhwane Village, North East District.
