Zambia's Hillary in the making

LUSAKA: While in Botswana it is now a foregone conclusion that Vice President Ian Khama will replace President Festus Mogae at the end of this month, in Zambia, politics is headed for uncharted waters.

In recent weeks, there have been increasing calls for President Levy Mwanawasa's wife, Maureen, to succeed her husband - Hillary Clinton-style - as president of Zambia when his second and last term expires in three years' time.

This is the very first time that the idea of a wife taking over from her husband as president of Zambia has been broached.
