Zambian youth wreak havoc in mine town

CHINGOLA: A gang of marauding jobless youths called 'stone dealers' is terrorising Chingola residents, especially at nightfall, stealing money and snatching cell phones and other valuables so they can have money to spend on beer and women.

Before the price of copper, Zambia's principal foreign exchange earner, collapsed on the global market following the credit crunch, these youths used to raise money by digging copper concentrates around the Nchanga Open Pit illegally at night and selling them to Zambians who could sell to the mines.

The 'stone dealers' used to sell the concentrates at give away prices as long as they had money for beer and women.
