Zambia fails SADC gender test

NDOLA: Zambia will not meet the requirement by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) of having 50 percent women representation in parliament by 2015 due to the pattern adopted for tomorrow's tripartite elections.

It will also not attain the third United Nations (UN) Millennium Development Goal (MDG), which calls for gender equality and empowerment of women, with the target for their representation in parliament at 30 percent in four years time.

Zambia will have other presidential, parliamentary and local government elections in 2016, a year after the gender targets with respect to representation in decision-making by SADC and the UN would already have been assessed.
