'Year of death' on Gaborone- Lobatse highway

Disaster struck unsuspecting commuters from Ramotswa yesterday morning when the bus they were travelling in, pulverised to smithereens, skidded off the road injuring four people.

Superintendent Sarah Gabathuse confirmed that the driver was trying to avoid a head-on collision at a hill on the outskirts of the village.
She said investigations into the accident were continuing but said that they suspect the bus was overloaded.
The police believe the bus was carrying about 60 passengers.
Meanwhile, another accident occurred near Boatle yesterday afternoon killing one person while another was admitted to Bamalete Lutheran Hospital with serious injuries.
"It was a head-on collision and each of the vehicles had two passengers in it," Gabathuse said.
She lamented bad driving along the Ramotswa - Gaborone road because it is narrow and some drivers are impatient and overtake in dangerous zones.
Though she did not have statistics at the time of the interview, Gabathuse said that indications are clear that there are already more deaths since the beginning of this year than last year.
"This is a year of death," she warned.
The Gaborone - Lobatse road is one of the busiest roads in the country because thousands of people depend on it to commute from Ramotswa, Otse, Lobatse and other small villages to work in Gaborone.  It also connects Gaborone to the North West Province in South Africa.
