WUC to install prepaid water metres in homes

SELEBI-PHIKWE: In a bid to enforce adherence to water restrictions, the Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) will introduce prepaid water meters in homes similar in fashion to the ones used by cellular phone networks and those introduced by the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) early this year.

WUC's spokesperson Erastus Mathumo said the move is aimed at curbing water wastage, adding that prepaid meters are already used in standpipes in villages around Botswana.  Speaking during a Kgotla meeting in Kagiso Township on Tuesday, Mathumo explained that when the corporation took over the responsibility to supply water nationwide, they encountered some challenges because before then it was much easier to supply towns with water from dams.

Taking over then meant they also had to supply villages from boreholes.  "Now we have to adjust to supply villages from boreholes that occasionally break down or produce low yields. As a result, we are perceived to be failing," he said.
