WUC to ban fishing for breeding space

Fishermen have until the end of this month before Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) closes its dams to fishing, The Monitor has established.

In a message posted on Facebook, the utility has advised fishermen that its dams will remain out of bounds to them throughout January and February in the New Year.  The restriction, which will apply to both commercial and leisure fishing, is intended to facilitate fish breeding and follows advice from the Fisheries Division of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks.

In an interview with The Monitor, WUC Corporate Communications Manager, Matida Mmipi, explained leisure and commercial fishing. Leisure fishing entails applying for a day's permit that costs P5.50. In order to preserve the environment around its dams, WUC discourages leisure fishermen from using cars. Those who insist on coming in cars are charged P13, an amount that Mmipi regards as "too little".
