Workers 'victimised' for diamond losses

Workers in the diamond cutting and polishing industry are concerned that whenever diamonds go missing they get the boot even when there is no proof that they stole them.

Reading a petition last Friday before the Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources, deputy permanent secretary, T.L Siamisang, Botswana Diamond Sorters and Valuators Union general secretary, Jacob Mpasopi, said some diamonds that went missing were not reported, "and this has cost employees their jobs. The management will do its own investigations when a diamond goes missing without involving the relevant authorities and these investigations are usually biased as the locals are the ones who feel the heat," he said.

He said in some cases managers in some of the companies handling diamonds flout procedures set out on what to do when a diamond goes missing.
