Workers angry at suggestion of suspending strike

Botswana Federation of Public Service Unions (BOFEPUSU) official Johnson Motswarakgole met the wrath of workers in Gaborone after he called for a suspension of the national strike, while the union leadership continues negotiations with the Directorate of Public Service.

In unison, the workers shouted him down and scrambled for the microphone at the podium to make their position clear. "This strike cannot be suspended because we will not have achieved what we intended. For starters people have been dismissed from work and we have to be sure about what will become of their fate before we suspend the strike," one worker said.

Another said that if the strike is suspended then the dismissed workers should be granted the right to march to the DPSM head office to demand their retrenchment packages as re-applying for their jobs will not guarantee them their current scales or re-employment. This would in turn mean losing out on all the years  they have worked for government, a young woman said,
