Women empowerment: Botswana tops them all

A Grant Thornton International Business Report (IBR) has placed Botswana ahead of several countries in women occupying senior corporate management positions. Celebrating this milestone at a breakfast meeting by Emang Basadi women's association and supported by mining giants De Beers last week, guest speaker Ratang Sehuhula said Botswana now ranks higher than the Netherlands, Sweden, United States of America (US), Canada, Australia, France, Italy and Germany.

She said 31 percent of women in Botswana are in senior management positions and that the highest in the survey is the Philippines at 97 percent and the lowest, Japan, at seven percent.

Sehuhula said that business confidence has increased remarkably from -12 percent to 41 percent. "I am not suggesting any correlation but I have faith that indeed women can make an impact in this positive business environment."
She cautioned against complacency but said: "Nevertheless, we deserve to celebrate, we have reached a milestone. It is time to rejuvenate the gender movement and make future targets."
