Woman gets damages after breach of promise to marry

FRANCISTOWN: The High Court has ordered a man to pay P20,000 in damages for breaching a promise to marry his former fiancee and mother of his child.

Besides the damages, Justice Moses Chinhengo said that John Kgopa should pay Basadi Ditshweu 10 percent interest per annum and costs. The judge said it was clear that Kgopa had promised to marry Ditshweu and then backed out. In her court papers, Ditshweu said Kgopa made her waste 11 years of her life after he promised but later refused to marry her.

Though she had initially sued for P120,000 the judge said that Ditshweu could not prove part of the amount she said she had spent on Kgopa.  She ended up saying that she would sue for P50,000 for damages of breach of promise to marry.
