Woman found guilty in fatal Kgale View stabbing

LOBATSE: A 31-year-old woman who killed a man after a drinking spree has been convicted of manslaughter by the High Court.

Phemelo Onkokame is said to have stabbed Mompoloki Lempadi to death at Kgale View, in February 2010, using a kitchen knife. The incident happened while Onkokame and Lempadi were drinking wine with friends. Justice Michael Leburu of the Lobatse High Court said it was clear that on the day of the incident, Lempadi exhibited amorous attraction towards Onkokame. After Lempadi and Onkokame exchanged cellphone numbers, the deceased referred to the defendant as 'baby' and orally expressed his love.

In her defence, Onkokame said that she took the knife in a bid to scare away the deceased, as she thought he was about to rape her. "In my judgement, I find it doubtful that the deceased attempted to rape the accused on that night. What is abundantly clear is that he exhibited love or affection towards the accused. "At no stage did the deceased try or attempt to undress the accused. The accused's version that she suspected the accused was about to rape her is therefore far-fetched and unreasonable," Leburu said.
