Woman arrested in fatal fire incident

Serowe police station commander, Superintendent Isaiah Makala, said that the woman is an employee of Kuka Construction Company, which is carrying out a de-bushing project along the Orapa-Serowe road. It is said a small fire she lit to make tea got out of control and burnt a large area killing two women. Makala said the women who were in the forest to harvest thatching grass were overwhelmed by the fire and failed to outrun it. One of them perished on the spot, while the other died at Nyangabwe Referral Hospital. Makala said the arrested woman has been charged with acting recklessly and negligently. The charge carries a term not exceeding two years in prison.
Makala said it is unfortunate that most of the roads in Botswana do not have firebreaks. This makes it easy for a fire to spread and burn large areas as it did in Paje.
