An accomplice witness yesterday shocked a court when he revealed how he masterminded fraud at Central Medical Stores (CMS) by faking government orders and invoices. The fraud resulted in the loss of nearly P20 million.

The 33-year-old witness, who is a graphic designer, has already been convicted for the crimes at CMS and the court ordered that for his own safety his name should not be revealed. He gave evidence for the state in the case in which 11 others are accused of defrauding the government.

He narrated how he was roped into the scheme by two of the suspects Abraham Marumo and Thabo Lekwae, who is still at large. He said he met the two through another suspect, Otsile Mosarwe. He told the court that he was told that the two men did not work but specialised in theft. He said that around November 2007, Marumo and Lekwae approached him with documents with information about payments made to CMS. He was asked him to design and reproduce similar documents. He said the documents included a government order paper, invoice and banking details of a certain company in South Africa.
