With limited resources, mental illness remains a challenge

Mental illness is a treatable condition but due to limited resources many patients remain uncared for and receive rudimentary health care, Sbrana Psychiatric Hospital Superintendent, Dr. Mpho Thula has said.

He explained that mental health centres are limited across the country, but those that are available like Sbrana Hospital, are well resourced. However, the biggest challenge is in following up with patients once they are discharged from hospital.

Some patients live in far flung areas and face varying challenges once they are discharged from hospital; because of the distance from the hospital it is difficult to contact and follow up with the patient.  "Treatment for mental illness depends a lot on building relationships and it is impossible to maintain regular contact with patients after their release from hospital," said Dr. Thula.
