Will BMD survive its congress?

The postponement of the congress twice, has fed speculation about deep-seated differences in the party with claims that it is faction-ridden and thin on the ground.

When re-scheduling the congress from December last year to March, the party leadership said they had realised that more time was needed for mobilisation and the building of party structures across the country to facilitate good attendance and wider representation. In the second postponement, the BMD said only 35 constituencies, out of the total 57 are ready with delegates, hence the congress will not be representative if held as scheduled.

That the two false starts have been good news to Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) is obvious. After all, BMD politicians engineered the first split in the ruling party when they broke away to found their new political vehicle.
