Why NBB is powerless against Btv

The National Broadcasting Board (NBB) is powerless to act against the state-owned Btv because the station does not have a broadcasting licence.

The chairperson of the NBB, Dr Masego Mpotokwane told Mmegi that, that is is why they cannot do anything about complaints that Btv is biased in its coverage of the civil service strike. "We have not licensed Btv. We are still in the process of doing so," Mpotokwane said. He added that he cannot give a time limit as to when the national broadcaster will be issued with a licence. Although he was unable to state when the licencing process for the station began, he hinted that it was "something that was started more than a year ago".

Mpotokwane would not say what action the NBB would take against the broadcaster had it been licenced. "It would depend on the issue. We would certainly investigate why they did what they were doing. But it is difficult to say in advance exactly what we would do," he said. He explained that they would revoke a licence if a broadcaster grossly violates its provisions.
