Who will win what?

With just a week before the October 16 general elections are held Mmegi Staffers GIDEON NKALA, RYDER GABATHUSE and ONALENNA MODIKWA tour the horizon of political constituencies to assess the chances of the political parties. Here are their predictions on how the parties will perform

GABORONE CENTRAL - BCP
The battle was always going to be between the BDP's Gomolemo Motswaledi and the winner in the last general elections Dumelang Saleshando until President Ian Khama spoiled what was going to be riveting a duel. With Motswaledi out of the way the constituency is for Saleshando to lose. All indications point to a political walk in the park for the BCP's Saleshando. The BNF's Kagiso Thutlwe might offer some competition, particularly if some BDP supporters throw their weight behind him as an act of protest. The BDP's Kgomotso Mogami is viewed within the BDP as a hired gun and hence repugnant to some BDP base. She is expected to come last behind the BCP and the BNF.

GABORONE NORTH - BDP
Until the BNF banished Michael Mzwinila from this constituency under dubious circumstances, on the eve of the 2004 general elections, the BDP 's Keletso Rakhudu seems to be in no mood to hand over a constituency that was first won by that darling of the opposition Maitshwarelo Dabutha. The BNF is in disarray with the party leadership committing blunders even on the eve of the elections. The BCP seems not to have made enough penetration to even feed from the scraps. The BDP's Rakhudu has made a big name for himself nationally. His sterling performance in Parliament must have endeared him to most voters and there is every likelihood that the deputy Minister of Finance and Development Planning will scoop this constituency. The margin in the last elections was a mere 450 votes.
