Who is telling the truth about Kumakwane water crisis?

Tension between Kweneng District Council (KDC) Water Department and residents of Kumakwane village has reached breaking point.

For three years now some residents have never had water in their homes but are expected to pay water bills every month. This has boosted donkey carts owners who sell water to the desperate residents. The only explanation the residents are given is that the engines had broken down or there was no diesel. Fingers are now pointing at a water bottling plant in the village owned by Festus Malan. Residents accused him of connecting his business to the pipeline that supplies the village. This week water engineer for KDC States Kabasiya confirmed that Malan had applied for water connection for domestic use but has since converted it to commercial use.  He said that the plant consumes water meant for the public.

Kabasiya further said that staff from his department recently visited Malan's plant, a kilometer from the village, where they learnt that a water meter for the place was bigger than the one for domestic use. "We were told that there is a borehole that supplies the plant but we couldn't find any operating," Kabasiya said.
