When court turns into 'immediate family'

Last Thursday lawyers in the Armando Lionjanga corruption case made their final submissions as the Gaborone Village chief magistrate's court transformed into a classroom, public square, a kgotla giving lessons in Setswana customs, and back into a courtroom.

Prosecutor, Kabo Leinaeng, of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions initiated the first step into the realm of a contest of semantics.

In laying out elements of the offence against Lionjanga, the prosecution contended, amongst the things, that they ought to prove that an immediate family member of Lionjanga, being his nephew, Kagiso Makgekgenene, and Lionjanga's sister, Alice Makgekgenene, had a direct interest in a company that proposed to deal with Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Board (PPADB).
