The team even attracted the tag of Whipping Boys of Africa. This came about as a result of the Zebras' perennial losses in all the competitions that they took part in. It was normal for the Zebras to lose with a score line of 6-0 or more. But with time things changed. The arrival of Veselin Jelusic in the Zebras' camp made a big difference.

Though the team never qualified for a major tournament, its fortunes changed for the better. It was during Jelusic's tenure that the Zebras attracted full capacity crowds at the National Stadium. When he stepped down, in came Colin Rowe under whose reign the Zebras' performance dropped.
