We've no pawnshops law yet, House told

Pawnshops in Botswana are operating without regulation, but only under a system of registration, the assistant minister of Finance and Development Planning Dr Gloria Somolekae said yesterday.

She told Parliament that her ministry is currently developing regulation for micro lenders, under which pawnshops will be regulated.  She said pawnshops benefit the economy through provision of their services to Batswana.

"These entities also create employment and pay tax when they generate profits," she said.  She said she was unable to give a specific figure of their contribution because Botswana Unified Revenue Services (BURS) did not keep statistics of the pawnshops' contributions.
