ONALENNA MODIKWA talks to notables of Selebi-Phikwe - past and present - and learns that they are keen to save the place that made them what they are from becoming a ghost town and that as a lad, PHK tended livestock in the woods here before the discovery of copper-nickel in the 1960s

SELEBI-PHIKWE: There are conflicting views on how the town, which prides itself on being the only town in Botswana with a surname, acquired its double-barreled name.
It sits on what was once crop-farming lands and cattleposts belonging to the people of Mmadinare.


This was before October 1962 when the discovery of copper-nickel deposits was first made at Selebi and before there was anything resembling the present network of roads in the area.
