Violent students drive teachers from classrooms

FRANCISTOWN: Student-on-teacher violence in schools is on the upsurge. In late 2011, University Of Botswana (UB) don Professor Alinah Segobye expressed concern at reports of growing levels of violence directed at teachers by students.

Addressing members of the Botswana Sectors of Educators Trade Union (BOSETU) in Serowe, she said most schools do not ensure the safety of teachers. She stated that over the years, government has not created a safe environment for teachers.  "Instead much discussion in schools focuses on parents' concerns for the safety of students in the classroom," she said.

The stabbing of a Mmei Junior Secondary School teacher towards the end of 2011 highlighted the potential danger that stalks teachers in classrooms. The unnamed male teacher was stabbed on the head, shoulder and at the back by three rowdy teenagers. In October 2011, an 18-year-old student at Swaneng Hill Senior Secondary School stabbed a teacher with a knife on the hand after an alteration in the storeroom.  The infuriated student is said to have demanded that the teacher give him back his "Beanie" which the teacher had confiscated.
