Villagers Want Police Officers Back

Gakuto village, some 30km outside Gaborone, must wait a little longer for the return of the two local police officers, who were allegedly chased away by the Village Development Committee (VDC) three months ago.

At a well-attended kgotla meeting on Saturday, the residents seemed to be in agreement that they want the police officers back and the current VDC officials to be replaced with new ones. However, things proved a little difficult when it turned out that before a new VDC can be elected, the out-going one must be given two weeks to compile and present a report at the kgotla. The complication means that the election of a new committee is postponed to October 15, 2008.
