Villagers request name changed

MATHANGWANE: Leaders from villages in the Tonota North constituency have expressed an aversion to the name Tonota. They told the Delimitation Commission Committee in Mathangwane on Monday that they do not want to be associated with the appellation.

Tonota North MP Fidelis Molao attended the meeting that the committee, which consists of chairman, Justice Terrence Rannowane, additional members, Godfrey Habana and Kingsley Sebele and secretary, Augustine Makgonatsotlhe, addressed. The community leaders who said they were expressing sentiments shared by their peoples, suggested names such as Shashe West, Bukalanga, Mathangwane- Mokubilo and Borolong-Mokubilo for their constituency.

Mpatane headman Lewaneka Mpatane was the first to speak saying he did not see the reason to divide the constituency as most people in the villages have common roots."They grew up together herding cattle. We are the Kalanga tribe, there is nothing that associates us with Tonota. Ke ipotsa gore go pala eng gore re bitswe Bukalanga constituency jaaka go na le le bo Kgatleng constituency. Re batla go bitswa ka morafe wa rona le rona (I don't know what the fuss is all about as all we want is to be referred to as Bukalanga constituency just as there is Kgatleng constituency)," said Mpatane. He said Mathangwane residents have combined letters of constituent villages to come up with Chamajanaboshe.
