Villagers' Apathy Worries Police Chief

LETLHAKANE: Letlhakane Station Commander Superintendent Solomon Sedumedi is appalled by the villagers' reluctance to participate in neighbourhood watch projects.

Sedumedi said that ironically people who are unwilling to get involved in crime prevention projects become victims of the crime spiral.

"Most of the projects do not require people to do anything extensive, all what is needed is just to meet other neighbours and plan to protect their property together but to get people involved is a problem," he said. Sedumedi said that when people leave their houses, they pack a few THINGS leaving most of the valuables in the house, which is why they should even be keener to join crime prevention committees. The police boss further said that it is important for people to know the changing trends. "Criminals are always up to date with what is going on and what is being done to prevent the crimes they commit so people should come together and try to find a common strategy to beat them." He lamented that in the end the police are accused of failure, while people are not willing to join forces with the police to fight crime, especially during holidays. "That affects our reputation as protectors," he added. Sedumedi said it is very important for people to know that engaging in home security has helped solve a lot of problems. He also said that even though crime can happen anytime and any day, some crimes are also seasonal.
