GANTSI: Johnnie Keemenao Swartz’s active political involvement dates back to 1981 when he left work as a trained Social and Community Development worker at Gantsi District Council.

He became an active member of the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) and was nominated to Council following the 1984 general elections. According to Swartz, the nomination was not given to him on a silver platter, but it was because of his hard work that was visible for the party and was seen by fellow party members.

“I was elected council chairman of Gantsi District Council by fellow members, a position I held until 1987 when I won the Constituency seat through a by-election under the BDP banner,” says Swartz.
