Vet seeks nod for FMD-free Zone 6

The Department of Veterinary Services plans to make an application to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) for approval of the containment of Zone Six as a Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) free zone without vaccination.

The move follows the fact that the cattle destruction exercise in the zone, to get rid of cattle with FMD, is now complete. In a press statement, the department also announced that it will continue intensive surveillance to ascertain the absence of FMD over the next three months.

"The surveillance will entail clinical inspection and other relevant tests in goats, sheep, pigs and wildlife in the containment zone," the statement said. The restocking of cattle in the containment zone will only start after approval of the containment zone as an FMD-free zone by the world organisation.
