A surprise visit by Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe yesterday did not offer much to Zimbabweans living in Botswana, nor their host government, as he was on a private mission to lay a wreath at the late former First Lady Olebile Masire's grave in Kanye. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe elections will be held on August 14th, 2013.

Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe jetted into Botswana yesterday to confer his condolences to the family of former President Sir Ketumile Masire, whose wife, Lady Olebile Masire passed away last month. The department of public relations, research and information in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation confirmed the short visit. Mugabe later laid a wreath in Kanye at the gravesite of Lady Masire also affectionatly known as Mma Gaone.

President Ian Khama later hosted his Zimbabwean counterpart at State House for lunch. The visit came shortly after Southern African leaders told Zimbabwe on Saturday to ask its courts to extend a July 31 deadline for elections, amid high tension between Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai over the timing of the vote. The Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit in the Mozambican capital came two days after Mugabe declared the election day, a date immediately rejected by Tsvangirai, his partner in the coalition government and main political rival.
