Vast sums spent in salaries and perks

A Parliamentary Committee Report says that in 2009, BEDIA spent 42 percent of its P92.29 million revenue just on salaries.

For the year, expenses were at P52.501 million with staff costs the highest expense item at 42 percent. "There has been a sharp increase in certain expenses during the year with entertainment expenses rising by 1,827 percent, rent by 85 percent, and car allowances by 39 percent," the report says.

The Committee chaired by Gaborone West North legislator Robert Masitara says Botswana Export development and Investment Authority's (BEDIA) new expenses being transport for the year, travel and subscriptions were at P474,176, education allowance at P178,389.00 and staff packages at P882,183.
