US trains Batswana on border patrol

The United States embassy will today train 25 employees from the Departments of Customs and Immigration on border patrol.

A statement from the embassy in Gaborone says that a US Department of Homeland Security official Johan Claassen will conduct the training. Claassen is a senior criminal investigator with the Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Custom's Enforcement and a regular trainer at the International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) in Otse. The five-hour training will be held at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport.  The topics to be covered in the workshop include; fraudulent document detection, general awareness and prevention of trafficking in persons, and US entry requirements and travel documents, said the statement.

The training is being arranged by the Consular Section of the US embassy and accomplishes the important goals of increased border security for both Botswana and the US; educating Botswana authorities to recognise and aid potential victims of trafficking; and generally enhanced skill sets of employees in the Ministry of Home Affairs.
