Unionists pledge their souls to help sacked workers

The Botswana Federation of Public Service Unions (BOFEPUSU) has said union leaders are ready to sell their souls to government to save the sacked essential service employees.

BOFEPUSU spokesman, Goretse Kekgonegile told striking civil servants in Gaborone on Friday that they will not abandon the fired essential service workers. He said they will do everything in their power to have the workers reinstated. He stated that they strike will not end unless the sacked workers are reinstated.  The union leader said a recent BOFEPUSU congress has resolved that the strike can only be suspended if the essential service workers are reinstated. He said that on Thursday, they held a meeting with other government officials and not the Directorate of Public Service Management (DPSM) as usual. He said former president Sir Ketumile Masire also attended the meeting and two cabinet ministers that Kekgonegile did not name. Another ex-president, Festus Mogae was not at the meeting because he had to attend to another urgent matter.

Some sources indicated that President Ian Khama attended the meeting. If this is true, it would be a major climb down by Khama who has snubbed union leaders since the strike started.
