Unionist fired for petitioning against sexual harassment?

A Botswana Diamond Sorters and Valuators Union (BDSVU) member has been fired for taking part in the union's petition last month where they complained to the minerals, energy and water resources ministry of sexual harassment and labour violations, Mmegi has learnt.

In an interview with Mmegi yesterday, BDSVU general secretary Jacob Mpasopi revealed that their members are being victimised, saying BDVSU branch secretary at Eurostar, Peggy Ntutu was fired from her job by her employer (Eurostar) for the petition they presented to the ministry. In the petition the diamond industry workers, complained of labour violations and sexual harassment of female workers.

When contacted, Ntutu confirmed that she was indeed fired for her role in the petition presented by the BDVSU."When I came back from the petition I was called together with co-workers where the general manager Mpho Mountain told us that we have not been productive in January. But the machines we use were not working and in that case you cannot be crucified for not performing as the machines, which we use to do the work were dead. At the meeting with the general manager I told her that procedurally we should have a union representative to represent us in the grievance hearing. She got angry and told me I am nothing, adding that she will throw me out of the company," said Ntutu.
