Unhygienic FCC abattoir declared dangerous

FRANCISTOWN: The Francistown municipal abattoir has been closed down after the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) declared that it is unhygienic and the building is dangerous. Refurbishment and renovation of the abattoir will require about P17 million.

According to the DVS inspection the abattoir is not complying with the Livestock and Meat Hygiene Act and in addition the building has some structural defects that could result in its subsidence and collapse.

The recommendations are that the building be decommissioned and demolished as soon as possible in the interest of saving the lives of employees and customers, that the butchery owners slaughter their cattle at BMC abattoir and that the existing abattoir staff be deployed to other departments of the city council.
