'Unassailable' Banda launches re-election bid

LUSAKA: Zambian President Rupiah Banda has since assuming office mostly ignored the jibes and jeers from the opposition. But no longer!

Ever since his election unopposed as the governing Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) leader and the party's presidential candidate early this month, Banda has been rapidly changing gears as he moves to swiftly consolidate what is rapidly developing into a high visibility re-election campaign.

Banda was elected MMD president at the party's national congress held at Mulungushi University campus in Kabwe after his prospective challengers dropped out of the race. He has seized the initiative and his campaign for the 2011 general elections is unfolding at a frenetic pace.  The opposition has largely been pushed to the shadows at least momentarily.
