UB don calls on teachers to fight for their rights

FRANCISTOWN: Deteriorating results at all levels of education throughout Botswana are a living testimony that the government is mistreating teachers, Dr Agreement Jotia of the University of Botswana has observed.

Inspite of boasting of diplomas and degrees, teachers did not necessarily know their value and often allowed their employer to oppress them, he added.

In what is arguably the strongest address since the relations between teachers and the government took a nose-dive in the civil service strike last year.  Dr Jotia said despite their high academic qualifications, the majority of teachers did not know how much they were worth and therefore subscribed to lopsided, myopic, conservative and traditional thinking that all would be well some day, and were thus not keen to see their ailing status improve.
