UB distance learners cry foul

Distance learners at the University of Botswana (UB) have complained that they are not given the same treatment as the full time students. A representative of the learners, Mpho Moreti said that they are made to pay the same fees as the full time students.

She indicated that they have requested for a breakdown of the fees so that they understand what they are paying for because they are not full time students. "We made that request when we enrolled for this course in 2004 but till today, we have not heard any response from the university," Moreti said. She explained that most of the materials they use have been declared irrelevant by the tutors. She stated that the material they are given is from University of South Africa and is irrelevant to the courses in Botswana. "We never use them and use a different course outline given by the tutors. If one fails and retakes a module they would be given the same material which we pay for and never use," Moreti said.

She revealed that most tutors, choose when to come to class to drill the distance learners. "As a result, we are always far behind in courses and when they come, we are forced to write about four tests in one day with 30 minutes breaks. They phased out assignments which were part of the continuous assessments without consulting us and replaced that with tests which are written from the last weekend of the month. You can imagine the pressure that we get under every month," Moreti said.
