Twelve die as bus plunges into ravine

LUSAKA: Twelve people died while 40 others were seriously injured when a bus travelling to Chipata on the Zambia-Malawi border careered off the road and plunged into a ravine.

Local police said the accident happened near the Luangwa bridge on Saturday when the driver apparently lost control at a bend and the vehicle veered off the road and plunged into the ravine, killing the 12 instantly.

Zambia Police spokesperson, Bonny Kapeso said the injured were admitted to Mumpashya, Katondwe Mission and St Luke's Mission hospitals while others were ferried to the nearby Nyimba government hospital.
