SELEBI-PHIKWE: The August 30 Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) primary elections in Tswapong North will pit incumbent MP Thebe Mogami against Cornelius Matlhare and Prince Maele.

The race is expected to produce sparks with the number of candidates having reduced after Sarajevo Malepeng relocated to Selebi-Phikwe. Oageng Modikwa, who also participated in the last primary elections for the parliamentary seat, is now concentrating his efforts on the race for the council seat.

Lerala-born army official Tebogo Motlhagodi had also shown interest in the current parliamentary race withdrew on the grounds that he was still a government official and did not want to compromise democracy. Mogami has been the incumbent since the time when Tswapong was dislodged from Palapye during the era of the late Moutlakgola Nwako. Since he was the area MP, Mogami has been pulling satisfactory numbers in the BDP stronghold without any threat from the opposition.
