"We do not mean to trivialize developments implemented by government, but this desert finally has a life," Kgosi David Toto II of Tsabong told journalists on Tuesday.

The desert's new lease of life comes in the form of over 200 camels from which the communities of Tsabong, Maleshe and Maubelo have pinned their hopes for much needed revenue and jobs, just as soon the Tsabong Camel Park, initiated by the Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO), is fully functional.

The park, currently overlooked by BTO and Tsamama, a trust composed of community members from the three villages, is part of the BTO's plan to diversify the country's tourism product while empowering, and encouraging participation of, communities. Located approximately 10 km away from Tsabong, construction of infrastructure in the park will be complete once funding, which had been deferred to the 2011/2012 financial year, is available, paving the way for short and long haul camel-back safaris throughout the Kgalagadi area.
