He was one of the few early technical personnel who pioneered the commissioning of Orapa mine and participated in the development of open cast mining regulations. In 1979 he was promoted and assigned to establish Letlhakane Mine where he managed the entire mining operations. He was responsible for the development of mining plans as well as the development of mining engineers.
Alex completed his primary education at Mbaga Primary School in Kenya and secondary school at Tabora High School in Tanzania. He was awarded a scholarship to study for a degree in Mining Engineering at Camborne School of Mines, in Cornwall, England, from 1963 to1967. He later completed a management degree through UNISA.In 1983 he secured a position as Assistant Manager with Mining and Technical Services, (MATS), UK in Angola but due to the challenges of a country undergoing civil war he resigned after only two years and returned home to Kenya.
