Tribal land sells like fat cakes in Tlokweng

Authorities in Tlokweng have expressed concern at the rate at which plots are being sold in the village.

Speaking at a stakeholder's workshop last week, Tlokweng Landboard chairman, Thapedi Matlapeng reminded those in attendance that it was unlawful to sell tribal land.  "The law is clear that tribal land is not for sale. I must remind you that this land here in Tlokweng is not only for Batlokwa but for Batswana in general as much as land in Kgatleng is not for Bakgatla or land in Molepolole not for Bakwena but for Batswana," he said.

He urged those who had the opportunity to be allocated plots to develop them instead of selling them. "One wonders where a person expects to stay after selling his or her plot. The police are also inundated with a litany of cases arising from misunderstandings after plots have been sold," he said. Matlapeng added that illegal sale of plots puts a strain on government departments.
