Transport officers quit under pressure

Two transport employees have resigned after alleged pressure from senior government officers who wanted to be issued with drivers' licences fraudulently.

A source in the Serious Crime Squad indicated that one examiner at the department of Roads and Safety in Mochudi has resigned citing pressure from top government officers.

The source said another testing officer at the department's head office in Maruapula, has also quit. He pointed out that the information they gathered on the resignations indicates that government officials are involved in the issuing of fraudulent drivers' licences. He said the perpetrators of the crime mostly are close relatives of top officers from the police, Botswana Defence Force and other pivotal institutions. "The information we have received so far suggests that these people offer between P5,000 - P7,000 to have their licences done within a short space of time," the source said.
