Traditional role of Dikgosi and elders is diminishing

FRANCISTOWN: The traditional role of dikgosi and elders is slowly diminishing due to the ugly nature of emerging issues such as gender-based violence. The voice of the family is also diminishing.

Speaking at the 16 Days of Activism Against Violence on Women and Children event hosted by the Botswana Police (North Division) at The Rock Church, women rights activist, Ludo Margaret Mosojane, said that it is imperative that Botswana should have a multi-sectoral approach towards curbing gender-based violence (GBV) in our communities because it is the only way we might identify the role that different aspects of social development play in the fuelling of GBV.

"Our generation was raised in a violence-free Botswana and these are some of the main features of our society in the '60s and '70s. There was very little police activity and visibility," she said. She said that structures of the society were made up of strong families and powerful principles that guided the choices of community members.
