Tourism sector on the rise - report

A report released by the Ministry of Environment, Tourism and Wildlife on the Tourism Statistics from 2007-2010 indicates that there has been a sharp increase in the utilisation of lodges by tourists over the period, mainly at the expense of hotels and private accommodation.

Camping and multi-country trips have also increased in popularity, with South Africa gaining the most ground. Whilst fewer tourists appear to be visiting Gaborone, most other areas are benefiting from the influx of visitors. This is an indication that tourists are travelling more whilst in the country, states the report.

The average length of stay by international tourists (nights) stood at 5.3 days and that the international tourist expenditure was P5.1 billion. The average money spent by international tourists per night is P450 and that domestic overnight tourist trips account for 1,166,141. Domestic tourist expenditure: day and overnight trips in pula terms is P955 million while the tourism direct gross value added was P2.9 billion. The report further states that the tourism contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) was 3.7 percent and that accommodation room occupancy rate is 48.1 percent, while the accommodation bed occupancy rate is 40.7 percent and that the average length of stay in accommodation (nights) is 2.2 days.
