Total Humiliation As BDP Sweeps SRC Posts

The ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) pulled a major surprise over the weekend when it swept the board in elections for University of Botswana (UB) Students Representative Council (SRC). The BDP cell at the UB, GS 26 proved unstoppable winning all the 13 seats up for grabs ahead of the Botswana National Front (BNF) and the Botswana Congress Party (BCP).

The victory coincided with a meeting of the BDP national council at the Maharaja Conference Centre in Gaborone. The new SRC committee was paraded at the council meeting by President Festus Mogae and BDP secretary general, Daniel Kwelagobe. The GS 26 SRC was then hosted for lunch by the party bigwigs on Sunday afternoon at the Restaurant. The SRC vice president Andy Boatle described the gesture as a thrilling experience.

This was the first time in decades that the BDP has won all the SRC seats. The new SRC president Mishingo Jeremiah said they won because of hard work. Both the BCP and the BNF entered the SRC elections separately this year after trouncing the ruling party over the last two years as a united block. In the presidential elections, Jeremiah garnered 1,192 votes to beat the BNF candidate who had 948. The BCP was third with 963 votes.
A member of the BDP's campaign team, Kagiso Jani said they won because the students were unhappy with a lot of issues on campus, which the BNF SRC failed to find solutions to. He cited accommodation on campus as one of the problems which the BDP took advantage of.
