Topisi elders demand access to CEDA

TOPISI: Elderly people have demanded access to government's financial assistance programmes such as the Citizen Entrepreneural Development Agency arguing that they also have the right to enjoy financial privileges extended to the youth.

Speaking during a recent kgotla meeting addressed by the Minister of Infrastructure Science and Technology, Johnny Swartz, elderly residents complained that when they enquire about financial assistance government officers tell them that they cannot benefit as they are grown ups who are about to die. "Gatwe ga re thusiwe ka gore re godile re a swa. (Who knows when we are going to die)?" asked one elderly woman.

Another elderly resident Dichaba Muyangwa appealed to government to give them a chance. "Let us be recognised as elders when such initiatives come. We have abundance of knowledge to set up businesses to economically empower ourselves. Let there be such programmes that are tailor-made for the elderly," he said.
