Top mine faces tax evasion allegations

LUSAKA: In a case likely to send ripples throughout the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, a copper mining company in Zambia - Mopani Mines - is walking the tightrope over allegations of tax evasion.

This follows a decision by a consortium of five international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that campaign for economic fairness to lodge a complaint against Mopani Mines' business practices to the international economics watchdog, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The complaint was lodged with  the OECD's Swiss and Canadian national contact point last month, based on the findings of an audit report last year by accountants, Grant Thornton and consulting firm Econ into Mopani.
